01 / STAY CONNECTED

Prepare Your
Internet Connection

One of the first things to think about before coming to Korea is how you will stay connected.

For most travelers, the internet quickly becomes part of almost everything. You may need it to check directions, translate a menu, contact your hotel, confirm a reservation, or simply find your way around.

Fortunately, you have several options.

eSIM

An eSIM can be activated digitally without inserting a physical SIM card. It can be a convenient option if your phone supports it and you want to connect soon after arriving.

PHYSICAL SIM CARD

A physical SIM card is another option for travelers who prefer using a local mobile connection during their stay. Note: Most physical SIM cards are difficult to find outside of Incheon Airport, so it is best to secure one upon arrival.

INTERNATIONAL ROAMING

You may also be able to continue using your existing mobile service through international roaming, depending on your provider and plan.

POCKET WI-FI

A portable Wi-Fi device can provide an internet connection for one or more devices while you travel.

PUBLIC WI-FI

You can also find Wi-Fi in many hotels, cafés, airports, and other public places throughout Korea.

It is possible to travel while relying mainly on Wi-Fi.

But there may be moments when you leave a hotel, café, or airport and suddenly find yourself without an internet connection.

That is when a little preparation can make a big difference.

"The important question is not whether you have Wi-Fi everywhere."
It's whether you can still find your way when you don't.

Before leaving your hotel or arriving in Korea, save the information you may need to access quickly.

Save the address somewhere you can access even when you are offline.

YOUR TRANSPORTATION ROUTE

Keep a copy of important directions, especially when traveling between the airport, your accommodation, and unfamiliar areas.

FLIGHT INFORMATION

Save your flight details and any important transportation information before you leave a Wi-Fi connection.

IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS

Keep essential contact information available somewhere other than an app that requires an internet connection.

RESERVATION INFORMATION

Hotel bookings, tickets, and other reservation details can be useful to have available offline.

Korea Has Plenty of Wi-Fi. But Don't Depend on It Completely.

Korea is a highly connected country, and travelers will often find Wi-Fi more easily than they expect.

But travel rarely goes exactly as planned. A dead phone battery, an unfamiliar subway station, or a changed reservation can quickly become more difficult when you cannot access important information.

Before you leave your hotel, make sure you know where you are going and keep the most important details available offline. Most large buildings and restaurants do offer Wi-Fi, but at restaurants or cafés it's best to order your food or drink first and then politely ask for the password. And if you're heading outside Seoul or the greater Gyeonggi area — say, to the countryside or into the mountains — keep in mind that Wi-Fi may not be available at all.

You do not necessarily need to buy the most expensive data plan or stay connected every second of your trip.

The important thing is to understand how you will access the internet when you need it—and to prepare for the moments when you cannot.
